Although they may seem like they are in another galaxy, TV stars are also ordinary people who look at social media and the comments about them. Ariel Winter has grown up since she was part of the cast of 'Modern Family', but she has not forgotten how criticism on social media affected her self-esteem.
The actress has opened up in People magazine. On the one hand, she points to all the fans of the series who vented their anger against her on social media: "In every headline I read about myself, grown adults were writing articles saying I looked horrible, that I was pregnant or that I looked like a fatso."
She also recalled that this whole stage caught her very young and not ready to receive such an amount of hatred without deserving it. "I mean, I was 14 years old. It damaged my self-esteem a lot. I understood what it was like to be hated. No matter what happened, I was a target. It was very difficult for me to look in the mirror and say, 'I love this version of myself', she confesses.
Removed by social services for physical abuse
Ariel Winter's story also has many darker overtones in her past. The Los Angeles Department of Services took custody away from her mother for physical abuse, something that marked her throughout her life: "It's a very deep, very painful stage for me," she said.
That tragic event caused Shanelle Gary to assume her legal custody. She speaks briefly, but very forcefully, about her relationship with her: "I had a wonderful adolescence thanks to her custody." After all, it is worth ing that she won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Television Comedy Ensemble for her role in 'Modern Family'.
