- US News. What are the Epstein Files? Here's what we know
Jeffrey Epstein's criminal defense attorney, David Schoen, has firmly denied Elon Musk's explosive claims suggesting that former President Donald Trump may be implicated in Epstein's crimes. In a recent social media post, Musk alleged that Trump is withholding the release of secret FBI files on Epstein because his name is mentioned in them.
Schoen, who began representing Epstein just nine days before his death in 2019, pushed back strongly: "I can say authoritatively, unequivocally, and definitively that he had no information to hurt President Trump. I specifically asked him!"Schoen added that Epstein had sought his legal advice for months before his arrest and maintained that Trump was not a subject of concern in their discussions.
Alan Dershowitz s Sentence Reduction
As Schoen rebuffs the accusations, attention shifts to Epstein's former associate Ghislaine Maxwell, who is currently serving a 20-year sentence for her role in the sex trafficking network. Solicitor General John Sauer recently requested more time to review Maxwell's appeal. While no formal pardon request has yet been made to Trump, her legal team has filed a petition with the U.S. Supreme Court, citing a 2007 non-prosecution agreement.
Harvard Law professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz, a former Epstein lawyer, has called Maxwell's sentence "excessive" and s commutation followed by a possible full pardon. "She has become the scapegoat for Epstein himself," said Dershowitz. "Had Epstein been alive, he would have been the focus of the prosecution, not her."
Trump's Past Ties to Epstein and Maxwell Resurface Amid Speculation
President Trump's past associations with both Epstein and Maxwell continue to fuel speculation. Numerous photos and social appearances place Trump alongside them during social events in the late 1990s and early 2000s, particularly at Mar-a-Lago and New York City galas. Despite these ties, Trump has consistently denied any involvement in Epstein's crimes.
"I had a falling out with him a long time ago. I haven't spoken to him in 15 years,"Trump said following Epstein's 2019 arrest. When asked about Maxwell, he commented: "I wish her well, whatever it is."Maxwell remains incarcerated in a low-security prison in Tallahassee, Florida, while her legal team and ers weigh their next move in pursuit of clemency.
