Special calendar and exceptions in June Social Security payments

There is a group of beneficiaries who follow a different schedule. People who started receiving Social Security benefits before May 1997 are assigned a specific day: the 3rd of each month. In June 2025, these beneficiaries already received their payment on Tuesday, June 3. This exception affects a significant segment of the older population who have been in the system for decades.

A particular case this month is that of the beneficiaries of Supplemental Security Income (SSI). These recipients will not receive any payments during June. However, this should not cause concern, as the SSA issued two SSI payments in May to offset the calendar setting. This practice is common when the first day of the month falls on a weekend or holiday, and the agency adjusts payments to ensure that beneficiaries receive their funds in a timely manner.

The SSA recommends that beneficiaries wait an additional three days for postal delivery before ing the agency if a payment does not arrive as scheduled. However, this advice applies to a minority, as currently 99% of Social Security payments are delivered electronically, which significantly minimizes delays in receiving funds.

Modernization of the Social Security payment system

The Social Security istration is phasing out paper checks in favor of direct deposits and prepaid debit cards. This transition is part of a broader effort to modernize the payment system and reduce fraud, benefiting both recipients and the istration itself with greater efficiency and security in transactions.

Social Security payments, which primarily retirees and older Americans, are critical to the household economy of millions of people.

The SSA issues monthly benefits to help cover essential living expenses for retirees, people with disabilities and surviving family of deceased workers, and is in many cases the primary or sole source of income for these citizens.

Recent discussions about possible changes to the taxation of Social Security benefits have also caught the attention of many beneficiaries. The proposal known as "Big Beautiful Bill" calls for the elimination of taxes on these payments, which could mean additional financial relief for millions of Americans who rely on this government program for their daily sustenance.
