Every day that es, science continues to advance, but also the findings that come to light can change life as we know it or knowledge about some aspect. In this sense, it has been discovered that dolphins communicate using their own language through whistles. This was found in Sarasota Bay, Florida, by a group of scientists.
This is the unique whistling language of dolphins
A group of experts from the Sarasota Dolphin Research Program (SDRP) and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI) have studied the bottlenose dolphin population in this Sarasota Bay for more than 50 years.
They used advanced technology such as suction cup hydrophones and digital acoustic tags, recording the whistles of more than 300 dolphins, discovering that more than half of the sounds that have been emitted do not belong to the characteristic whistles, but are characteristic, gaining relevance as a possible form of communication.
The uncharacteristic sounds caused reactions or vocal responses, indicating some referential or emotional function. The trials were conducted in controlled locations and in the open sea with drones and sensors to analyze the behaviors, observing vocal exchanges in a structured way. An example: a young man responded with his own whistle to his mother's almost 150 times, which may indicate that there was dialogue between the two.
This suggests that dolphins not only communicate with unique whistles but can use other sounds they learn to communicate in a shared way. If this is confirmed, dolphins will have a basic, standard vocabulary that is close to that of humans.
In this way, the study is ongoing, with the hope of shedding more light on the matter, being close to deciphering a language that dolphins have used throughout their lives.
