Aflight from Ahmedabad to London crashed at Sardar Vallabhbhai International Airport with 242 engers on board. The Air India plane suffered the incident during routine runway operations.
Social media videos show a large column of black smoke. More than five fire engines were dispatched to the scene, according to the Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services Department.
The aircraft involved in the accident is a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner with registration VT-ANB. The flight signal was lost shortly after takeoff.

The cause of the accident and the number of victims are still unknown. The Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services Department quickly deployed more than five firefighting units to deal with the incident. Authorities confirmed the immediate mobilization of response trucks and stressed that emergency teams continue to work on control, damage assessment and assistance in the affected area.
Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu said he was "deeply shocked" after learning of the air incident in Ahmedabad. In a statement, he confirmed that he is personally monitoring the situation and has ordered all aviation agencies and emergency response teams to act quickly and in a coordinated manner to "mitigate any further risk".
The aircraft caught fire after the impact, although at the moment it is not known for certain the type of aircraft involved. This was indicated by the Ahmedabad Police Commissioner, GS Malik, who said that investigations are ongoing and that intensive work is being done to clarify the causes of the accident.
