In a groundbreaking move for sports broadcasting, the Los Angeles Chargers' Week 1 clash in Sao Paulo, Brazil will stream exclusively for free on YouTube - setting a new precedent for the NFL and marking the platform's debut as a live NFL game broadcaster.

Forget expensive cable subscriptions. All fans will need on Friday, Sept. 5 is an internet connection to witness the historic matchup, which will be available globally via YouTube - with some exceptions like Canada and a few other countries.

This unprecedented partnership between the NFL and YouTube was confirmed Tuesday, signaling a major evolution in how fans experience pro football.

YouTube is the primary source of NFL information for fans

"YouTube viewers spent over 350 million hours watching official NFL content last year," said Mary Ellen Coe, YouTube's chief business officer. "Streaming the Friday night game for free around the world is thrilling - and we'll do it the YouTube way: interactive and creator-driven."

While YouTube TV has been home to NFL Sunday Ticket since 2023, this event marks the platform's first time fully owning the live broadcast of a single game - and making it freely accessible. The broadcast promises a fan-first approach, likely integrating creators and interactive features that only YouTube can deliver.

Corinthians Arena will make NFL history

The game will take place at Corinthians Arena, which last hosted an NFL matchup in 2024 when the Eagles edged out the Packers 34-29 before 47,000 roaring fans. Though the Chargers' opponent hasn't been officially named, all signs point to a showdown with the Kansas City Chiefs, with an announcement expected soon.

Get ready, NFL fans - September 5 isn't just about football. It's about a new era in how we watch it.
