No one has any idea what's going through Aaron Rodgers' mind. That's been true about a lot of things over the past few years, but it's especially true when it comes to the football aspect. At 41 years old, Rodgers doesn't seem to have his mind made up on whether he wants to continue playing. In the meantime, his options have dried up, with only the Pittsburgh Steelers left as a realistic landing spot.
The Steelers organization is adamant that Rodgers will sign before the season begins. That much is clear from their limited moves at the quarterback position this offseason. Time is seemingly running out, but the team is set to possibly make a move on Thursday that could signal Rodgers is the only QB they want and need.
Gabriel Davis to visit Pittsburgh Steelers, who are "seeking additional receiving help"
The idea of g Gabriel Davis has some football analysts wondering if Pittsburgh's offensive vision is to run deep routes on every single play. If so, they will need Rodgers to execute it, because Mason Rudolph and Will Howard don't necessarily fit that style.
The team traded for deep threat DK Metcalf early in the offseason, while Calvin Austin III is a speed demon. Tight end Pat Freiermuth operates best down the seam in the deep-middle of the field. Davis, of course, was Josh Allen's preferred target on deep es while he was with the Buffalo Bills.
Steelers offensive coordinator found his most success as an offensive play-caller while he was with the Tennessee Titans during the 2019 and 2020 seasons. In 2020, the Titans ranked third in offensive yardage and fourth in scoring among all NFL teams. Derrick Henry ran for over 2,000 yards, which was made possible due to Ryan Tannehill having a career year.
A big reason for Tannehill's success was Smith's ability to get players open in the intermediate and deep parts of the field, especially off play-action. Smith may be trying to recreate some of that success, but he'll need a quarterback with great arm strength to do it, and that's Rodgers.
