The Paris Olympics kicked off a few days before the official opening on July 26, with rugby, football, handball, and archery starting early to fit into the packed schedule. USA woman rugby team historic performance
The USA Women's Rugby Sevens team made history in Paris by securing the first-ever Olympic medal for the U.S. in rugby, both for men and women. The team clinched the bronze medal by narrowly defeating Australia 14-12. Trailing 7-0 at halftime, the U.S. team rallied in the final minutes to secure their victory. This impressive performance caught the attention of philanthropist Michele Kang, who has pledged to donate $4 million dollars over the next four years to the team. "I had some conversations last night and this morning and I have committed a million dollar a year for the next four years and that is to get you guys win the gold medal." The team's joy and gratitude were evident in the video of the announcement, with players even hugging Kang in appreciation.
The US lost against the gold medal winners, New Zealand but the win for the bronze medal was what make Michele Kang invest in them. The donation aims to enhance resources for players and coaching staff as they prepare for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Kang is owner of the Washington Spirit, Olympique Lyonnais Féminin, and London City Lionesses women's soccer clubs, is committed to advancing women's sports through Kynisca Sports International.
Her generous donation to the USA Women's Rugby Sevens team is part of her broader mission to transform women's sports. The funds will help provide top-notch facilities, technical staff, and innovative sports science to the team. "We are stunned and beyond grateful for this transformative gift from Michele to advance USA Women's Rugby," said Bill Goren, Chief Executive Officer at USA Rugby.
