The South Korean phenomenon that captivated the world in 2021 is back stronger than ever. Squid Game, the series that turned the children's game into a dystopian nightmare, will premiere its third season on June 27 on Netflix. But the first trailer has already unleashed a wave of reactions among fans, who claim to have been emotionally devastated after watching the preview.
Without the need for dialogue, the trailer manages to convey a gut-wrenching tension. It all begins with Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), the central protagonist of the previous installments, being carried back to the rest area in a coffin, as if the game were starting again from death. The players must once again turn a silver button that delivers a sphere, seemingly to assign them to new teams.
And there comes one of the hardest emotional blows: Geum-ja (Kang Ae-sim) and Yong-sik (Yang Dong-geun), mother and son, receive spheres of different colors. The consequence is clear: they must compete against each other. The image of both facing each other, with anguish in their eyes, was enough to leave many viewers in tears.
The shocking scene at the end of the Squid Game trailer
But the most shocking scene appears at the end of the preview. Kim Jun-hee (Jo Yu-ri), a player who has hidden her pregnancy, looks directly at the camera with a tear running down her face... followed by the cry of a baby. Without a single word, the scene reaches an emotional power that left no one indifferent.
On social media, fans were quick to express their shock: "The trailer completely broke me. The silence, the tension, the crying... This is no longer a series, it's psychological warfare," wrote one . Another added: "The mother and son looking at each other, and then the baby crying... I already know this season is going to destroy me."
The show's creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, has hinted that this installment will delve even deeper into Gi-hun's transformation, as he now carries the burden of guilt, betrayal and loss. After discovering that his supposed ally, Young-il, was actually the Front Man in disguise, and having lost his best friend Jung Bae (Lee Seo-hwan), the character faces a deep dilemma: "Does he still believe he can convince others and stop the game? Or will he give up and become another Front Man?" asks the director.
The new images released by Netflix show Gi-hun handcuffed to a bloodstained bed, and the Front Man thoughtfully holding his mask in his hand. Everything points to this third season being a rollercoaster of emotions, darker and more intimate than ever.
