Flag Day 2025 will be celebrated on Saturday, June 14, marking the adoption of the design of the American flag in 1777. Although it is not a federal holiday, it is important to know which services will operate normally and which will maintain their regular operations during this patriotic date.
Flag Day is one of those celebrations that, although it does not officially give workers a day off, has an important historical and patriotic significance for the United States. This holiday commemorates the Continental Congress' decision to establish the official design of the American flag, which took place on June 14, 1777.
Although many citizens are unfamiliar with the significance of this date, Flag Day is a time to honor one of the most recognizable national symbols in the world. The Stars and Stripes has gone through 27 different variations throughout history, arriving at the current design with 50 stars representing each of the states of the American Union.
Banking and government services available
During Flag Day 2025, as it is not considered a federal holiday, banks will maintain their normal operations. Bank branches that normally open on Saturdays will continue to offer their services to the public without modification to their usual hours. The same applies to online operations and ATMs, which will operate as normal as any other day of the year. This is an advantage for those who need to carry out banking transactions during this date.
The United States Postal Service will also operate as normal for Flag Day. As it is not a federal holiday, mail will be delivered on regular routes and schedules. However, as it falls on a Saturday, many post offices may have reduced hours as is usual on weekends, regardless of the celebration. Therefore, it is advisable to check with your local office to confirm specific opening hours.
Origin and historical significance of the celebration
The history of Flag Day dates back to 1885, when Bernard J. Cigrand, an 18-year-old schoolteacher from Waubeka, Wisconsin, placed a flag in his inkwell and assigned his students to write an essay on what the flag meant to them. From then on, Cigrand became a staunch advocate for establishing a national day to honor the flag. His dream did not materialize until 1916, when President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation establishing June 14 as Flag Day. Later, in 1949, President Harry Truman signed it into official national celebration.
Curiously, Flag Day shares the same date with another important event:
- The birth of the United States Army. June 14, 1775.
The Second Continental Congress authorized the formation of ten companies from Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia to march on Boston in of the war of independence against England. This army was initially known as the Army of the United Colonies, until it changed its name to the current United States Army after the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
