The US Food and Drug istration (FDA) has raised the level of alarm over a recall of the famous Dr. Pepper Zero Sugar. The move is due to a critical labeling error: the drinks, promoted as "zero sugar," actually contain the full formula with regular sugars. This revelation has raised concerns about the health consequences for thousands of consumers in several states.
Last month, both the FDA and Dr. Pepper issued a voluntary recall covering a total of 19,203 cases, consisting of 12- and 24-packs of Dr. Pepper Zero Sugar. The problem lies in the discrepancy between the actual content and what is stated on the label. Despite the promise of "Zero Sugar," these carbonated beverages incorporate full sugars, which constitutes an unintentional deception and problems for people who cannot consume sugar for health reasons.
The FDA's reclassification of this recall to a Class II designation emphasizes the seriousness of the situation. The agency defines a Class II recall as one in which "use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote".
While the likelihood of serious long-term effects may be limited, the unexpected presence of sugar represents a major health risk.
Hidden risks
The main vulnerable group on this issue is diabetics, who strictly depend on nutritional information to control their blood glucose levels. Accidentally consuming a sugar-sweetened beverage instead of a "zero sugar" beverage could lead to a dangerous increase in blood glucose, with serious repercussions
In addition, people with other medical conditions that require them to limit or completely avoid sugar consumption, or those who are following specific diets for health reasons, are also at risk of inadvertently consuming a component that is harmful to their well-being.
Identify altered products
Dr. Pepper Zero Sugar cans involved in this labeling error recall can be identified by the product code XXXXRS05165 and a "best before" date of February 16, 2026. It is crucial that consumers who have purchased this type of soda carefully check this information on their products.
The production of these drinks was the responsibility of Pepsi Beverages Company, a Jacksonville, Florida-based company that operates under license to manufacture Dr. Pepper products. The defective soda was distributed and reached three US states: Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. Authorities are urging people to take this information into and check the products
