It didn't take long after the 2025 NFL Draft for people to start wondering how the Brownswere going to manage four quarterbacks heading into the season. Joe Flaccoand Kenny Pickett aren't going anywhere (yet), but with two rookies in the mix - Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders - something has to give.
So far, both young QBs have made a solid impression during minicamp and OTAs. Sanders has flashed the playmaking ability that made him a star at Colorado, and Gabriel looks every bit the poised pocket er who led Oregon to the College Football Playoff. But with two vets ahead of them, the Browns might be forced to make a move.
A Potential Trade That Could Change Everything
Enter Kurt Benkert, former NFL quarterback turned analyst. He recently tossed out an intriguing idea: Gabriel could be headed to Miami before the regular season kicks off.
According to Benkert, the Dolphins had their eye on Gabriel in the draft. "They liked him a ton... and were going to take him a few picks later," he posted on X, noting that Miami ultimately traded away that pick after Cleveland swooped in. Now, with Tua Tagovailoa's injury history (Pro Football Talk, 2024) and a still-developing Quinn Ewers, the Dolphins might want another insurance policy at quarterback.
If the Browns end up dealing Gabriel, all eyes shift to Sanders. Despite a surprising slide to the fifth round, Sanders came into the league with a big name and big expectations. A trade would suggest the Browns believe he's worth developing - not just as a camp arm, but potentially as a future starter.
Gabriel went earlier in the draft and has the numbers to back it up - 3,857 ing yards and 30 TDs last season at Oregon. But if Cleveland is willing to move him, it means Sanders is proving something behind closed doors.
And that changes the trajectory of his rookie year.
Because in a league where opportunities are everything, a cleared-out path might be all Shedeur Sanders needs to show he belongs - not just on the roster, but in the conversation for the Browns' future.
